Log Cabin Square

This is a cute little pattern for a basic Log Cabin square. Log Cabin squares have a long tradition in quilting, knitting, and crochet. They make really cute and colourful blankets. This pattern is really easy to make and a great way to destash your yarn too!
This pattern has been tech edited and tested.

Log Cabin Square – Free Crochet Pattern

Information
Yarn
Any DK Yarn. I used miscellaneous Acrylic DK yarn in five colours.
Hook & Other Materials
- US Size H/8 (5.0mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Skill Level

Sizes/Finished Measurements
8” height, 8.2” width
Gauge
16 sc and 18 rows = 4”

Notes
This pattern is written in US terminology.
Beginning ch-1 does NOT count as stitch.
After each section is done, fasten off, turn the work counter-clockwise 90 degrees and join the new color to the left-hand corner of the section.
For every row, the first sc should be in the first st.
When working down the side of a section make 1 sc for every row. Insert your hook into the open spaces made by the ch-1 turning spaces.
Each section is made up of 10 rows of sc.
The number in brackets at the end of each round [i.e. (6 sc)] is the number of stitches you have made.
This pattern shows you how to make a basic Log Cabin Square. To make the square bigger add more sections in the same way using these instructions.
When finished, block the square to dimensions listed above.
Join Log Cabin Squares into a blanket using your preferred joining method.

How to make the Log Cabin square
Section 1
With Color A, Ch 11
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn (10 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st and in each across, turn (10 sc)
Rows 3–10: Repeat Row 2.
Fasten off. Rotate work 90 degrees.
Section 2
Row 11: Join Color B to left-hand corner of last section, ch 1, turn work, sc into same st. sc across, turn (10 sc)
Rows 12-20: Repeat Row 2.
Fasten off. Rotate work 90 degrees.

Section 3
Row 21: Repeat Row 11 with Color C (20 sc)
Rows 22-30:Repeat Row 2 (20 sc)
Fasten off. Rotate work 90 degrees.
Section 4
Row 31: Repeat Row 11 with Color D (20 sc)
Rows 32-40:Repeat Row 2 (20 sc)
Fasten off. Rotate work 90 degrees.

Section 5
Row 41: Repeat Row 11 with Color E (30 sc)
Rows 42-50:Repeat Row 2 (30 sc)
Fasten off.
Weave in ends for all sections.
